Restaurant 1833 - Stoke's Adobe
Monterey, CA 93940
This restaurant was once known as Stokes Adobe, which was built by the Mexicans in the 1830's and is now believed to be haunted. Reports say that in the early hours of morning, footsteps can be heard walking around upstairs when no one is up there. A child's cries have also been heard in the same area. Stories say that employees who lock up for the night and turn the lights off before leaving end up getting to the parking lot to find the lights turned back on.

As a kid in high school I grew up nearby the place then called Gallatin's it was well known as haunted.
One of my customers in my after school job was the late Harold Benadom, Chief of the Monterey Police Department.
I was told the poor Monterey Police got called so many times back in the 1960's when I first learned about it they finally stopped coming out as the cuffs would not fit the ghosts at Gallatin's.
The story I recall being told second hand but from a reliable source (The Police Chief himself) was someone was inside and set off the alarm. The MPD got in to hear the door upstairs slam shut. They chased it up there and on entering the room no one there and no way out of the room except by the cops.
Based on stories in the Monterey Peninsula Herald at the time and with the Chief's story I had no reason to doubt it.
You should know back then Gallatin's was a favorite of those associated with Bing Crosby who held what is now called the AT&T Golf tournament there - back in the day it was The Crosby Clambake. Many hollywood types frequented the place back then and yes it was a long time ago.
